Our food lovers at Texas Jack’s love the diversity of different meals throughout the day. There’s no better way to start a lazy weekend day than with brunch. With brunch, you can choose from our delicious spin on breakfast foods or a more traditional lunch.

Did you have a little too much fun out with your friends last night? No brunch menu is considered complete without mimosas and Bloody Marys. Not quite breakfast and not quite lunch, you may be wondering where brunch began. Let’s dive into the history of brunch:

The Hunt Breakfast: The Predecessor of Brunch

Prior to the creation of brunch, the wealthy elite of the United Kingdom participated in “hunt breakfasts.” These elaborate breakfasts included multiple courses such as bacon, fresh fruit, chicken livers, eggs, and sweets. However, some people believe that the true pre-brunch meals originated within Catholics. Traditionally, the religion required its followers to fast before Mass and then sit down to a huge meal in the middle of the day.

The First Mention of Brunch

British author Guy Beringer wrote an article in the 1895 publication of Hunter’s Weekly titled, “Brunch: A Plea.” Instead of eating heavy meals earlier on in the day, Beringer suggested that people enjoy eating lighter meals with their friends.

Brunch Hits The United States

Brunch wasn’t always so fancy when it reached the US. It mainly consisted of eggs, toast, and bacon. Following a late night of partying, college students would chow down on “varsity meals” in the late morning and early afternoon.

First Phase of Brunch

During the Prohibition Era in the 1920s, brunch evolved into more of an event. Wealthy white people used this occasion to day drink even though alcohol was banned at the time. At this time, Bloody Marys and mimosas entered the brunch world.

The Second Phase of Brunch

During the 1950s, brunch became more of a female-centered event as ladies gathered to day drink and nosh on delicious breakfast fare. At this time, women serving their gal pals had access to quick, easy recipes for brunch.

The Third Phase

In the 1980s, hotels began serving brunch buffets for their guests, which gained immense popularity. Shows such as Sex and the City made brunch even more popular as the famous friends regularly met for such an event. Although brunch is popular everywhere, Las Vegas is known for its all-you-can-eat brunch buffets complete with day drinks. In Atlanta, chefs take brunch to the next level with chicken biscuits and other rich Southern food (and of course, drinks).
